The certificate nobody notices until it has expired

Every trade on a construction site carries tickets, licences and insurance, and every one of them has an expiry date. The paperwork lives in a dozen places, and the moment it matters — an incident, an audit, a principal contractor asking — is the moment somebody discovers a card lapsed three weeks ago.

SwapCerts, built for Momentum Construction, put that record in one place and made it checkable from a phone. Its own onboarding stated the pitch plainly: view the status of your workers' and subcontractors' cards and licences anytime, anywhere.

The Product

Work is organised by project, each carrying its stage — tender through to site — and each with a roster. A company creates its projects and invites others to join theirs, so a subcontractor's credentials travel with them across the sites they work on rather than being re-collected by every head contractor. Company profiles hold the organisation-level documents; individual records hold the tickets.

Key Features

  • Certificate, licence and insurance records with expiry tracking
  • Projects with stage tracking from tender to site
  • Invitation-based joining, so credentials follow the subcontractor
  • Worker and subcontractor status visible at a glance
  • Company profiles alongside individual records

Scoped down on purpose

The concept was a startup idea rather than an internal tool, so the advice was to release on a single platform first and validate the idea before funding an Android build. That is a smaller engagement than the one originally scoped, and it was the right one: the question worth answering was whether trades would maintain the records at all, and a second platform would have cost money without answering it.

Compliance products carry gates that arrive from outside the app — what a certificate record is worth as evidence, how long it must be retained, and who is liable when it is wrong. A Launch Gate Audit exists to find those before launch rather than after.
